Mubasher: Qatar Electricity and Water Company (QEWC) has finalised 99% of Umm Al Houl plant, the plant’s CEO Jamal Al Khalaf said.
With a total cost of QAR 11 billion, the plant is deemed one of the largest water desalination and power generation utility in the region, according to a statement to the Qatar Stock Exchange (QSE) on Sunday.
Production capacity of Umm Al Houl plant amounted to 136.5 million gallons of water per day and 2,520 megwatts of electricity.
Al Khalaf expected that the plant will be fully operated ahead of the deadline or by the second half of 2018.
The plant comprises five distilleries; four of them are operating, while the fifth one is under the test run, the statement showed.
Umm Al Houl plant secures 25% of Qatar’s electricity needs, in addition to 30% of the nation's water demand.
QEWC owns 60% of Umm Al Houl plant, while Qatar Petroleum (QP) and Qatar Foundation own a 5% stake each, and Mitsubishi Corporation has a 30% stake.
